Diving the Keys     (5)

In Tavernier, Florida (near Key Largo) for 10 days of CCR (Closed Circuit Rebreather) diving. Will post photos and update blog when able—long days of diving, as I need to log 30-40 more hours on my CCR unit to qualify for the next level of training. More to come, including tweets on Twitter throughout the day.

NYC & The Explorers Club     (1)

I’ve returned to NYC to present a seminar at The Explorers Club on Tuesday evening. The topic is “Explorers & The Media” and my talk will give members of the Club a sense of the media landscape today (as far as exploration goes). The seminar, like all member seminars, is for Explorers Club members and their guests only. I expect I’ll have 30 or so people in the Trophy Room.

GHF & DC     (5)

In Washington, DC for two days of board meetings for GHF, the Global Heritage Fund. Beautiful time of year to be in DC—the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and it’s not too hot to be outside.

Big Weekend at The Explorers Club     (3)

Lots going on at The Explorers Club right now. At this moment, the Chapter Chairs from around the world are having their annual meeting at the Club. Then there’s a lunch break, after which I’ll be there all afternoon for a Board Meeting. Tonight, a private cocktail reception is being given for Donald Johanson in recognition of his receiving the Explorers Medal this year. Tomorrow evening is the big Annual Dinner at the Waldorf=Astoria, and I’m happy to say I’m NOT the MC this year (I was in ‘09), so I can relax and enjoy the evening with friends. This year’s theme is SPACE. Sunday, another Board Meeting as well as all-day activities, lectures and fun at the Club. Busy, busy, busy, but all in the name of exploration, science and sharing knowledge.

Realscreen Summit 2010     (2)

I’m in DC this week for the Realscreen Summit - a networking event for people who work in the non-fiction film & television industry. I’m excited to go, as many of my friends from both History and Discovery will be there. There aren’t any screenings of films (like at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival) but there are a number of worthwhile seminars, panels, and discussion groups about trends in the non-fiction space. There will also be some fun networking events, so plenty of schmoozing this week. If anything of interest happens, I’ll report it via Twitter.

Back from the Galápagos     (2)

Had a fantastic time in Ecuador—what a beautiful country. I visited Guayaquil, Quito, Otavalo, Cotacachi, and five islands of the Galápagos. The mainland was interesting in an historic / sightseeing way, but it was the animals on the islands that made the trip so worthwhile. Tortoises, iguanas, frigate birds, blue-footed boobies… so much fun. I’ll post photos to the Gallery section in a few weeks once I’ve had a chance to review and select some images.

NMAI Art Market 2009     (0)

It’s been a fun 10 or so days since Thanksgiving and the weather in New York has been particularly beautiful. Until today, that is. It’s now a cold, rainy, somewhat dreary day outside. Good day to stay in by a fire, read a book or watch movies… However, since I don’t have a fireplace here, I decided to go to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian to see the annual NMAI Art Market. Each year, a few dozen truly gifted artists make the journey from all across the Americas to sell their pieces in NY. Really amazing stuff—will put some photos on Twitpic for people to enjoy. JB

The Need for Global Heritage     (0)

Just returned from Old Blighty, where I was enjoying a few days of England’s fine summer weather (aka clouds and rain). As followers on Twitter know, I had a fun time watching sheep races and visiting National Geographic’s store on Regent Street, in addition to other things. In any case, the following video just went live on CNNMoney.com’s site: GHF Video Link. It’s a candid interview with Jeff Morgan, the executive director of Global Heritage Fund, in which he discusses the goals and challenges GHF faces. On October 27th, there will be a one-hour special about GHF on CNN’s Impact Your World. More to come as I hear it.

Movie: The Cove     (1)

I saw the most inspiring film last night at a special screening in New York. It’s called The Cove and I think you should do everything you can to see it and support the people who made it. Watch the trailer http://www.thecovemovie.com/ and then make sure you see the film in theaters when it goes nationwide in a few weeks. Seriously, it’s one of the most professionally-produced, effectively-told “activist” stories I’ve seen, and I told dolphin-champion Ric O’Barry and Oceanic Preservation Society Exec. Director Louie Psihoyos that I’ll do all I can to help his cause.

Super Falcon     (0)

Monterey, CA (USA) – I’m in Monterey, California on a special assignment for the Today show – very exciting! Not just because I’m filming what I hope will be the first of many exploration-oriented segments for Today and NBC, but because this assignment is just so cool. Internationally renowned ocean engineer/inventor and fellow Explorers Club member Graham Hawkes has just finished building a new toy: a $1.5 million state-of-the-art submersible called The Deep Flight Super Falcon.

Graham has offered to give me a chance to test-fly the Super Falcon and see what underwater “flying” is really like.
