CURRENT EXPLORATIONS

I’ve been so fortunate to have traveled to many countries in search of answers to some of the most fascinating mysteries on our planet. Here, you’ll find a synopsis of some of my journeys, including dates traveled, places visited, and experts involved. My sincerest thanks to everyone who has contributed to these efforts, and I’m hopeful that these explorations represent only the beginning of many, many more journeys to come in the years ahead — and that you’ll come along for the ride!

Summer 2009
Internationally renowned ocean engineer/inventor and fellow Explorers Club member Graham Hawkes has just finished building a new toy: a $1.5 million state-of-the-art submersible called The Deep Flight Super Falcon. Unlike most submersibles that simply go up and down on a tether, the Super Falcon is completely autonomous and actually flies through water like a plane. It’s a revolutionary and privately-funded pioneering effort.

I learned about the Super Falcon from Graham at the Explorers Club Annual Dinner in March ’09 and asked if I could join him for a test flight. He agreed and, on June 29th, he and I met in Monterey, California so we could tape a special segment about the Super Falcon for the Today show.

Winter 2009
Although it’s not yet confirmed, I’m hoping to go to Antarctica this November as part of a 3-week cruise. The highlight of the trip (and the real reason I want to go) is a 5-day crossing by foot of South Georgia Island, following in the footsteps of legendary explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. Stay tuned for more updates.

Winter 2009
This trip is confirmed. In December, I’m going to the Galapagos for several days to study the world that Charles Darwin explored while aboard the HMS Beagle. Again, more to come in the months ahead.
