Mystery Explored: Machu Picchu: Lost City of the Inca
Expedition Dates: August 4 - 17, 2006

In 1911,  famed American explorer Hiram Bingham stumbled across a remote Inca city atop a high peak in the Andes. He thought it was the famous lost city of Vilcabamba. Was what we now call Machu Picchu an ancient fortress, or did this glorious ruin have another purpose? To find out, I followed in the footsteps of Hiram Bingham, building a log bridge across a raging river, examining the stonework at the site, and reviewing ancient manuscripts to discover the “true” purpose of Machu Picchu.
