Mystery Explored: The Real Temple of Doom
Expedition Dates: July 26 – August 10, 2005

I traveled into the Peruvian Amazon in search of clues to the iconography of the ancient civilization of Chavín de Huántar. Complete with sacred idols and bizarre rituals, the temple was at the heart of an ancient cult that controlled society, not by war or force, but through mind control and hallucinogenic plants like the San Pedro cactus – at least, that’s one theory.  To investigate this civilization, I went cayman hunting in the Amazon; crawled through the dark tunnels of the mysterious temple; and learned just how potent the San Pedro cactus was in the cult of Chavin.
